Each year a young person from Austria travels to Bethlehem and lights three lanterns from one of the flames that has burned in the Grotto of the Nativity for well over 1000 years. These lights are then taken back to Vienna where Boy and Girl Scouts from throughout Europe gather with their lanterns and distribute the “Light of Peace” back to their home countries. Two of the Lights from the Grotto are transported on an Austrian Airline plane from Vienna to New York City where the flame is met by Scouters from throughout the United States who light their lanterns and begin their journeys spreading “The Light” throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
