Privacy Policy

Mid-Iowa Council, Boy Scouts of America, is committed to respecting and protecting the personal privacy of its members and those who visit its website. It is our policy to acquire personal information from users only by overt and voluntary means, only when it is in the interest of the user to provide it, and to utilize this information only for the purpose it was provided.

The information that follows explains the kinds of information the MIC website collects, how it is used, the conditions under which it is made available to third parties, how information is maintained, and our compliance with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act.

NOTE: This privacy policy applies only to www.midiowacouncilbsa.org. This privacy policy does not apply to any unit website, as their content is not controlled by Mid-Iowa Council, Boy Scouts of America. Please contact the administrator of any unit, or other Scouting-oriented website for information about their own privacy policies and the information they collect about their site visitors.

What information does this site collect?

This site collects anonymous data that is not indicative of and cannot be traced to an individual without the cooperation of their Internet Service Provider. This data includes information about the user's remote IP address, referral data (which page "linked" to the present request), and the browser software's user-agent string. This information is accepted passively from the HTTP headers that are sent from the user when requesting any file from the server. Other anonymous data entered by the user may be collected in a common repository, including terms entered into the search engine, ZIP codes entered into the council locator, etc.

Personally identifiable data is collected only by means of form interfaces on the site, into which the user must voluntarily enter the information requested. This information is requested only when it is necessary to accomplish the overt purpose indicated by the interface containing the form that requests it. Such interfaces require only the information reasonably necessary to accomplish the overt purpose indicated on the interface.
No attempt is made to covertly or "quietly" collect personally identifiable information, nor are cookies or any other tracking technology used for the purpose of coordinating information that a user may opt to enter in various interfaces on the site.

What organization is collecting the information?

Information entered by site visitors is retrieved directly by Mid-Iowa Council, Boy Scouts of America: 1659 E. Euclid Avenue, Des Moines, Iowa, 50316 - telephone (515) 266-2135.

How does the MIC use the information it collects?

The anonymous information collected is used to monitor the usage of this website and the interests of those who use it. Data such as the volume of traffic to the server, the number of visitors a certain section of the site receives each month, or the most popular search terms are analyzed to derive general statistics about the site's reach and the audience's usage patterns.

Personally identifiable information is used only for the express purpose for which it was submitted.

With whom does the MIC share the information that is collected?

The MIC does not share personally identifiable information about its web site visitors with anyone.
Reports, statistics, and other analysis of aggregate anonymous information may be shared within the organization or provided to third parties at the sole discretion of Mid-Iowa Council. This information does not include any personally identifiable information.

Exception: Mid-Iowa Council reserves the right to use all information at its disposal and to share this information with ISPs and other third parties as necessary to investigate any incident of misuse or abuse of its site, server, or information systems.

How does the MIC comply with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) of 1998?

This legislation applies only to websites of a commercial nature. Providing personal information is never a prerequisite for accessing any of the content on this website. Specifically, refusal to provide personal information via a web interface will never result in a user being denied access to any online content he would be able to access were the information submitted.

Policy Modifications and Deviations

This policy was last modified on 27 October 2011

We may modify this privacy policy and will post those changes here. If the privacy policy changes in the future, we will not use any personal information you have submitted to us under the current Privacy Policy in a manner that is materially inconsistent with this Privacy Policy, without your prior consent.

It may be necessary to deviate from this general policy in unique instances and for specific purposes. In such instances, a link will be provided to a description of the deviation. This link will be placed where it can be reasonably expected to be noticed prior to submitting any information for which this privacy policy is modified or exempted in any way.

Privacy

We realize most organizations, especially those that include youth membership, are very concerned about privacy.  Keeping member information secure, and using it only as our members would want us to, is a top priority. It is Doubleknot's policy that all your membership information is confidential and owned by your organization.  Doubleknot does not rent, sell, or share personal information about you or your organization with other people or other companies except to fulfill products or services you've requested, comply with law enforcement and to classify your organization in our list of member organizations.  Access by you to your Member Information is available through a password and unique user ID.  By default, from log in to log out, all communication between our server and your browser is encrypted.

We do not advertise to you, your members or anyone you choose to provide with information about your organization other than to communicate to organization administrator's significant changes to our service.  When we make or plan to make significant changes to our service we may inform and solicit feedback from the administrator's about these changes.

Use of cookies

When you visit Doubleknot's site we use "cookies" to provide context to your visit. A cookie is a small amount of data that is transferred to your browser by a Web server and can only be read by the server that gave it to you. It cannot be executed as code or deliver viruses.

Most browsers are initially set to accept cookies. You can set your browser to notify you when you receive a cookie, giving you the chance to decide whether to accept it. Cookies are required to use Doubleknot.

While Doubleknot uses cookies to provide context to your visit, and our Web servers automatically log the IP/Internet address of your computer, Doubleknot does not use this information other than to protect ourselves and our members against fraud and illegal activity.  Doubleknot does use cookies to "remember" the user ID and, if you consent, password you use to sign on to the site.  We store this information solely to make the sign on process easier.  Other cookies we use are "session only" cookies and are removed then your visit to our site ends.

How We Secure Information

Doubleknot protects information in several ways.

When you send confidential personal information to us on our Web site, such as a credit card information, member name or user ID and password, secure server software which we have licensed encrypts all information you input before it is sent to us. The information is scrambled en route and decoded once it reaches our Web site.  By default, when signed on or making a payment, all communication with us is encrypted.  Our secure communication can be verified when clicking on the secure communications seal on our payment screen and at sign on.

We also use encrypted communications to transmit information between us and our service providers.  For example, to process credit card payments we have a secure connection to our payment processor.

For software, secure communications and service providers we only use well known and established companies generally recognized a leader in their field.  For example, we use GeoTrust, Inc. technology for secure communications and VeriSign, Inc. for payment processing.

We do not store or maintain highly sensitive information.  This information includes social security and credit card numbers.  Where we are required to collect this information to fulfill a product or service, we immediately pass it on to the service provider.

To safeguard the confidentiality of personal information we collect from unauthorized access or disclosure our servers are housed behind a firewall in secure, restricted access facilities with 24 hour surveillance.  Only named and authorized representatives of Doubleknot or our facility management companies can physically access our servers.  To secure data from accidental loss, alteration or destruction we back up data on our servers every four hours.  In addition, a record of all our commerce transactions are also kept by our payment processor.

All settlements for online payment taken on behalf of our member organizations are securely transmitted to our bank account via Electronic Funds Transfer.  This account, with CitiBank F.S.B.,  has specifically been established to house funds from our member organizations.  Withdraws on this account require the signature of two company officers and internal policy requires a documented funds remittance request.  For organizations that have provided us with proof they have a federally recognized  tax exempt status in the United States, funds collected on your behalf are deposited into an escrow account in your organization's name with Citibank, F.S.B.  CitiBank F.S.B. is a part of CitiGroup, Inc.
